Our pro puts GTA Five’s most powerful supercars through their paces.

“What’s the fastest car in GTA Online?” is a tricky question. Is it the fastest car in a brief haul race? Around a standard circuit with corners? With the highest top speed? Going in switch sides then pulling a J-turn and accelerating up to 60mph?

There are a lot of variables that it’s possible to measure speed over, but for the purposes of this article I’m going to concentrate on two of the most useful–lap times and top speed. Listed below will be the five fastest cars around a regular circuit in GTA online (where braking, cornering and acceleration all play a part in getting a quick lap time), followed by the five fastest cars on a long straight lump of road (when all cars are travelling at their maximum speed).

Looking at the best cars across these two metrics will then permit us to infer what the best overall car might be for GTA Five. The following results come from the very detailed and scientific car testing I carried out on this YouTube channel. Check out these lap times and top speeds docs for an overview of my methodology.

Also, as you might expect the top five cars in both lap time and top speed are all in the Supercars class. If you’re interested in cars from other classes or what’s below fifth place in supers check out these movies covering lap times and top speeds.

Lap times

Top speeds

5th: Progen Itali GTB Custom-built–127 mph

4th: Truffade Nero Custom-made–127.25 mph

From the above you now know the cars you want if you have a corner-heavy race and a long top speed race. But having the best in one situation doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll have the best in the other. For example, the RE-7B, Tempesta and Zentorno are pretty low down in the overall top speed list for supercars (12th, 20th, and 16th respectively) despite being in the top five for lap times. In addition, the 811, Banshee 900R and Itali GTB Custom-built are nowhere to be seen when it comes to the overall lap times list for supercars (20th, 25th, and 17th respectively) despite being in the top five for top speeds.

So what if you just dreamed one car that would suit you in every situation? It may not be the absolute best in any single situation but it would be very competitive everywhere–a jack of all trades car. Well, based on the lists we’ve seen there are two clear candidates–the only two cars that show up in the top five for both lap times and top speeds: the Grotti X80 Proto and the Truffade Nero Custom-made.

When it comes to lap time there was only a 0.114 2nd difference inbetween the X80 Proto in fifth and the Nero Custom-built in fourth. Similarly, with top speed there was only a 0.25 mph difference inbetween the Nero Custom-built in fourth and the X80 Proto in third. Clearly these two cars are very well matched, so let`s compare them in other ways.

Both cars have all wheel drive setups which make them good propositions in stunt races, where AWD vehicles get more of a speed boost in tube sections than RWD (rear wheel drive) or FWD (front wheel drive) vehicles. They both have two seats and a good amount of visual customisation, albeit the Nero Custom-built has more going for it in this respect due to the level of depth of its customisations in Benny`s garage. Both cars also require the use of an aftermarket spoiler to be added to increase their traction (shown via the traction bar in Los Santos Customs), like most other cars in the game. However that is where their similarities end.

One of the main differences these cars have which will actually affect you in a racing situation is weight. Weight in GTA has no effect on spectacle but is instead programmed to be used in collisions. A car that weighs more will fare better in a crash with a car that weighs less. The big winner here is the Nero Custom-built, which weighs dual that of the X80 Proto. The X80s 900kg weight actually makes it the 2nd lightest car in the supers class (very first is the 880kg RE-7B) and therefore is much more susceptible to being shoved insanely off course when taking even a petite hit. Conversely, the 1800kg weight of the Nero Custom-built makes it the 2nd strongest car in the supers class (very first is the 1995kg regular Nero) and therefore will be much less affected in crashes. If your opponent attempts to take you out of a race he`ll have a much stiffer job of doing it if you`re driving a Nero Custom-made rather than an X80 Proto.

Some people are better drivers than others, but everyone can benefit from a car being effortless to drive from the get go. Even top drivers will have more consistently good results in an lighter to drive car. In this respect the Nero Custom-made is leagues ahead of the X80 Proto. The Nero Custom-built is stable under braking, cornering and acceleration whereas the X80 is much more wild until it is mastered. Mistakes are a lot more likely in the X80 than the Nero Custom-built.

Cost is also an significant factor. Once again the Nero Custom-made is the victor here, where you`ll make around a $650k saving for choosing it over the X80 Proto. The Nero Custom-built will set you back $Two,045,000 ($1,440,000 to buy the regular Nero and $605,000 to upgrade in Benny`s) whereas the X80 is a whopping $Two,700,000. All of these values are the base cost of the vehicles not including spectacle and visual upgrades, but those are the same for both cars anyway. Neither of these cars are cheap but the Nero Custom-built certainly offers much better value for your money.

Overall Winner: Nero Custom-made

The Nero Custom-made and X80 Proto both stood out above the rest, and of the two it was the more latest, less expensive, stronger and lighter to drive Nero Custom-made that put itself another step ahead. Being the fourth quickest car in the game in terms of both lap time and top speed it was always going to be a top tier all-rounder, but its excellent value for money, accessibility for all drivers, and better capability to deal with real racing situations make it the number one choice for a jack of all trades supercar. If you`re low on money or just wanting to simplify your life, you truly can`t go wrong with the Nero Custom-built when it comes to the Supercars class.
