Even amid manufacturing bottlenecks, Tesla Inc., formerly known as Tesla Motors, is working on expanding its lineup as much older automakers launch their own electrical sub-brands. The next vehicle after the midsize Model three sedan will be the Model Y — not its official name — but it is believed to use much of the Model Three’s engineering and architecture, remixing it into a compact crossover bod style.

Autocar reports that the Model Y will feature the same style of gullwing hinged rear doors as the Model X and will suggest an interior close in options and spirit to the Model Trio. Tesla is also expected to suggest total autonomous driving capability in this model, which will build on the latest versions of Tesla’s Autopilot driver assistance system. The Model Y will wield as many as eight cameras as part of this autonomous drive system, in addition to twelve ultrasonic sensors and a fresh type of forward-facing radar intended to work in all weather conditions. Autocar posits that the cost of the hardware alone should make this system an option that will be priced just south of $Ten,000 per vehicle: Versions of the car without this system should also be suggested as base models, per Tesla custom-built.

When it comes to range, the Model Y is expected to be able to travel at least two hundred thirty miles on a utter charge, but it is not known at this point whether a larger overall size than that of the Model three will permit the fresh crossover to suggest larger battery options with a far greater range. The current rhythm of range improvements among other automakers will likely make a range of two hundred thirty miles seem outdated by the time the vehicle goes on sale.

Autocar reports that Tesla aims to price this compact crossover just north of the Model Three’s kicking off price of $37,000, which could make it competitive with gas and hybrid crossovers from other automakers. The Model Y is believed to be unveiled in two thousand eighteen and to inject production later that year.

Tesla has had issues fulfilling request for its current range of vehicle and has yet to begin deliveries of the Model Three. The compact sedan is presently scheduled to inject production in the 2nd half of 2017, but the automaker has a substantial number of orders to fulfill before extra capacity is created to produce other models, including the existing Model S and Model X. The tempo of scaling up production is one of the largest current challenges for the automaker.
