Suspected car thief shot by Scappoose officer
Both the officer and the suspect were taken to the hospital
SCAPPOOSE, Ore. (KOIN) – A Scappoose police officer shot a suspected car thief after the driver hit another officer with a car as he fled the scene.
The incident happened around seven p.m. near Dutch Canyon when officers stopped suspect Eric A. Caldwell, 40, in a car. As one officer approached the car, Caldwell took off and hit another officer, St. Helens Police Chief Terry Moss told KOIN six News.
The 2nd officer then fired and hit Caldwell, who continued driving. Moss said the suspect and a female accomplice went to a Fred Meyer store, stole another car from the parking lot, and fled.
According to Moss, Caldwell and his accomplice made it onto I-5 but crossed the median and were involved in a collision near Kalama.
A Cowlitz County patrol car was bruised after it caught fire during the I-5 stop. The fire began when the harass catalytic converter touched tall, dry grass and sparked flames, officials said.
