“On June Five, two thousand seventeen shortly after Four:00 PM, a Wenatchee Police Officer spotted a suspicious vehicle in one of the Riverfront Park parking lots near the foot of Fifth Street in Wenatchee. Officer Josh Virnig ran the vehicle license plate and found the two thousand thirteen Toyota Corolla was reported stolen out of Milton-Freewater, Oregon. As Officer Virnig circled back around to contact the vehicle, it drove away to the north through the parking lot.

Officer Virnig initiated a pursuit that was quickly terminated due to the congestion in the area. The vehicle continued north on Riverside Drive where the driver fled from the vehicle, leaving it in gear. The Corolla continued at low speed until it collided with a parked, unoccupied two thousand three Chevrolet Trailblazer. Neither vehicle sustained significant harm.

CAR THIEF SEARCH INCLUDES SHERIFF HELICOPTER AND K-9

Two passengers from the fleeing vehicle remained where the stolen vehicle was abandoned. The unknown suspect driver fled towards the Columbia Sea. The suspect was described as a late 20s Hispanic masculine with skinny build who was last seen wearing a grey tank top and black cut-offs. As of the time of this press release he has not been identified.

Officers from the Wenatchee Police Department and Deputies from the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office conducted a ground search of the area for the suspect. This included the use of a Sheriff’s Office K-9 and Chelan County’s helicopter that was in the air for an unrelated mission and aided in the search of the riverbank while returning to base. Despite this coordinated effort, the suspect successfully escaped capture.

The vehicle was recovered and taken to the Wenatchee Police Station where a search was performed of the interior. Leads into the identity of the suspect were developed out of this search and remain under investigation. The passengers at the time of the incident were incapable to identify the driver. Both passengers stated they had just met the driver.

The vehicle’s possessor was notified and will be recovering their vehicle from the Police Department in the next few days. When identified, the suspect may face charges of Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, Attempt to Elude, and Reckless Endangerment in addition to other related driving offenses.

While stolen vehicles are a relatively uncommon occurrence in our area, they are usually recovered fairly quickly. In this case, the keys and key fob were stolen with the vehicle. This can be seen as a reminder to lock your vehicle when it is unattended and never leave your keys in it.
