2015 World Green Car Award Goes to BMW i8
Chosen from an initial entry list of ten fresh vehicles from all over the world, The BMW i8 was announced the two thousand fifteen World Green Car Award Winner at a press conference hosted by the Fresh York International Auto Display, Bridgestone Corporation, and Autoneum. The brief list of three finalists included the BMW i8 as well as the Mercedes-Benz S five hundred Plug-In Hybrid, and the Volkswagen Golf GTE.

The BMW i8 “Should be the Icon for all ‘Green’ Cars”
A truly unique green car, the BMW i8 is a plug-in hybrid Two+Two sports car. It is the very first plug-in hybrid vehicle from the BMW Group, with groundbreaking sustainability features complementing its premium character, quality, and style. This is a truly forward-looking sports car, with all functions integrated into the aluminum Drive module, including drive system technology, high-voltage battery, chassis, and crash and structural functions. The “life module passenger cell,” as BMW defines it, is made from carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP). Like the wings of an angel, the doors open heavenward, inviting the driver in for a pleasure rail like no other.
“The BMW i8 gasoline hybrid looks so cool,” said one of the judges panel of experts for the World Green Car Award, “it should be the icon for all ‘Green’ cars..So it inspires Green Passion, which on paper looks like one hundred fifty five mph on the i8’s three cylinder turbo gasoline engine, four-wheel-drive and four seats. The i8 adds so much enjoyment to a sensible lifestyle that it needs to be recognized as a excellent Green Car.”

To qualify for the two thousand fifteen World Green Car award, vehicles must be fully fresh or substantially revised, and in production. They must be already available for sale or lease to the public in quantities of at least Ten. They must have been available in at least one major market during the period beginning January 1, two thousand fourteen and ending May 31, 2015. Also taken into consideration is the vehicle’s environmental responsibility characteristics, such as fuel consumption, tailpipe emissions, and use of a major advanced power plant technology, aside from engine componentry.
Speaking at the two thousand fifteen Fresh York Auto Display press conference, Ulrich Kranz said, “We feel utterly honored, receiving this prestigious World Green Car award for the BMW i8.” Kranz, the director of the BMW i model line continued, “Together with the two thousand fourteen World Green Car Award for the BMW i3 it just confirms the rightfulness of our purpose-built strategy when it comes to electrical cars. BornElectric instead of conversion is the way to go.”
This is the 2nd year in a row for the BMW Group to win the World Green Car Award, with the BMW i3 winning in 2014. It is the third win for BMW since 2010, when the BMW’s BlueMotion technology took the prize. In total, the BMW Group has won a total of four World Car Awards including the prestigious overall World Car of the Year in two thousand six for the BMW 3-Series. This year, the BMW i8 also won AutoGuide’s two thousand fifteen Reader’s Choice Green Car of the Year, and took the “Best Production Preview Vehicle” Award in 2013.

From Friday, April three through Sunday, April 12, the largest-ever lineup of fresh vehicles are on display for this 115-year-old event. Hosting a broad range of prominent industry events, automobile executives and members of the media attend from all over the globe. Legendary investor Warren Buffet kick-started events as the keynote speaker for the NADA/J.D. Power Automotive forum hosted by the Auto Showcase on March 31. Two days of press conferences and the World Car awards, as well as the Nielsen’s TV Advertising Awards, and the Gala Preview charity event formed an entourage leading into the largest and most-attended auto display in North America.
The Fresh York Auto Demonstrate is an arousing combination of fresh ideas, technological innovation, awesome concept cars, and almost 1,000 of the latest fresh cars and trucks. More Than Just a Beauty Pageant
The World Car Awards (WCA) are more than just a beauty pageant. For this awards program, the panel of judges consists of seventy five prominent automotive journalists from around the world. With a concentrate on excellence and innovation on a global scale, this panel serves as an significant resource for ensuring the integrity and credibility of the World Car Awards.
The World Car Awards Steering Committee annually appoints five green experts for assistance with the World Green Car Award. Up to speed on the latest green technologies, these five green experts scrupulously review all of the documentation and specs associated with each World Green Car Award candidate. The seventy five World Car Awards panel then votes based on the green experts’ recommendations. This vote actually took place in February, and the ballots were tabulated by the international accounting stiff KPMG.
For this year’s World Green Car Award, the five green experts were (in alphabetical order): Phil Berg (USA – PopularMechanics.com); Richard Bremner (U.K. – Autocar magazine), Claus-Peter Koeth (Germany – automobil-industrie.de), Yumi Kawabata (Japan-environmental journalist), and John Voelcker (USA – GreenCarReports.com).
