Police: Maui woman intentionally drove off cliff, killing twin during fight
UPDATE 6/8/16: A judge has dropped the second-degree murder charge against Alexandria Duval. Get the total story here.
The woman who was found dead at the scene of a crash after a car plunged two hundred feet off a cliff in east Maui has been identified.
She was Anastasia Duval, 37, of Haiku.
Another woman, also a 37-year-old from Haiku, was eliminated from the rocky shoreline and transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center emergency room in critical condition. She has not been identified.
The vehicle has since been liquidated by helicopter.
Maui firefighters and police responded to the Puuiki area, about four miles south of Hana at Four:42 p.m. Sunday, after a white two thousand sixteen Ford Explorer went over the makai shoulder directly across of St. Peter Catholic Mission church located at 47-699 Hana Highway.
A witness told KHON2 what he witnessed moments before it happened.
“They just sped up and drove right past our van and turned off the cliff, and the cliff is like several hundred feet, just a steep, steep cliff, and landed at the bottom on some rocks,” said Alan Akina.
According to police, the Ford Explorer traveling south crashed into a rock wall and fell down the side of the cliff, landing onto the rocky shoreline below.
Rescue crews had to by hand pry two women from the vehicle as it lay on lava rock surrounded by water.
A rescue team from Kahului and Air one helicopter were dispatched to assist with extricating the occupants from the vehicle. Hana firefighters also hiked down by foot.
“You could see from the top of the cliff where we were, the driver sticking either like a T-shirt out or the air bag out the window to let people know that she was alive,” Akina said.
All elements surrounding this incident are still being investigated, to include the involvement of speed, drugs, and alcohol.
This is Maui County’s eighth traffic fatality for two thousand sixteen as compared to four at this time last year.
