Potential workers under-utilized in state

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released in March some interesting details about involuntary part-time workers in Washington state.

For example, the broadest measure in two thousand sixteen of labor underutilization, designated U-6 (includes the unemployed, workers employed part time for economic reasons, and the marginally affixed to the labor force), was Ten.Three percent in Washington, compared to the U.S. average of 9.6 percent.

Washington had 198,600 unemployed residents in 2016, and another 133,500 were employed part time for economic reasons (also known as involuntary part time).

Some 45,900 Washingtonians were marginally linked to the labor force in 2016. These are individuals who would like a job and have looked for work during the past twelve months, but had not searched for work in the four weeks preceding the survey and are therefore are not counted as unemployed in the official unemployment rate.

Another 12,200 discouraged workers (a subset of the marginally fastened) did not look for work during the four weeks preceding the survey because they believed no jobs were available for them.
