A gang of four carjackers influenced by the action-adventure movie game series Grand Theft Auto had turned Delhi into Vice City, prowling the streets to loot high-end vehicles in the dead of the night.
The accused arrested on Tuesday by Delhi crime branch include two minors who told cops during questioning that while playing the game, the characters inspired them to steal expensive cars by copying their modus operandi.
According to officers, the gang only targeted swank cars with lone drivers late in the night. In the very first week of February, Delhi Police received several complaints of carjacking in which the attackers not only snatched the vehicles but also violently assaulted the victims.
On February 9, the gang stole a Toyota Fortuner from Model Town locality and smashed a baseball on the head of the SUV’s holder who was driving it. The victim is presently battling for life at Sant Parmanand Hospital in north Delhi.
The Grand Theft Auto series created by programmers David Jones, Mike Dailly and Sam Houser references the term used in the US for motor vehicle theft. Most games are set in fictional locales modelled on cities, usually either Liberty City, Vice City, or San Andreas, which are stand-ins for Fresh York City, Miami, and the state of California, respectively.
The series concentrates around many different protagonists who attempt to rise through the ranks of the criminal underworld, albeit their motives for doing so vary in each game. It has also gained controversy for its adult nature and violent themes.
“As per the modus operandi learnt from the games, they very first rammed into vehicles and then created a road rage situation by thrashing drivers and taking away their vehicles,” said Madhur Verma, DCP (crime). “The accused used to carry baseball bats with them and they ruthlessly attacked victims. One of the victims sustained grievous injuries and is in critical condition since the accused smashed a baseball bat on his head.”
The carjackers set their glances on a particular vehicle, followed it closely to a convenient spot, deliberately hit it with their car and compelled the victim to stop on the excuse of an accident. The gang operated most of the time in stolen cars with tinted glasses so they could not be seen from the outside. The panes of all the recovered cars had also been tinted jet black by the gang.
“On February 11, we had a tip-off about a member of this gang coming to Mangolpur Khurd. Crime branch constituted a team and nabbed one of them with the Toyota Fortuner car after his arrival at that place,” Verma said. “During sustained interrogation, the accused was identified as Lakshay Shokeen, the kingpin of the gang. He along with his aide Deepak alias Changa and two juveniles have committed several robberies and carjackings in outer, west and northwest Delhi.” The DCP said that Lakshay, a class eleven dropout, confessed that the gang had committed a slew of robberies this month to earn quickeasy money to lead a lavish life.
“Shokeen exposed the hideout of Deepak, who’s studies till class eight and works as an auto driver,” added Verma. “He was arrested near Rohini sector eighteen metro station. The two juvenile accused were nabbed from Mianwali Nagar.
The DCP pointed out that after stealing the vehicles, the thieves would switch the number plates and attempt to sell the cars in Haryana. “We have recovered Ford Endeavour, Toyota Fortuner, Maruti Baleno, Honda City and Hyundai I20 cars from their possession,” he said.
