Carjacking At Car Wash
Man Carjacked While Washing His Car
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – In a matter of minutes, a man was carjacked while washing his car in Midtown Memphis Thursday. Now Memphis Police need help tracking down the suspects.
It happened around Two:20 p.m. Thursday at the car wash on North Avalon Street near Madison Avenue.
Surveillance movie demonstrated the 62-year-old victim drying his two thousand seven lime green Dodge Charger and within three minutes the suspects drove up in a 1999-2005 gold Chevrolet Impala.
One suspect pointed a gun at the victim and demanded his keys. According to Memphis Police, a fight ensued and the victim ran away, ripping off his keys.
MPD said a 2nd man picked up the keys and took the victim’s car, driving south on Willett Street toward Madison Avenue.
“I have felt safe but you never know what’s going to happen anywhere,” said Fathima Jayah, a regular customer at the car wash.
“I wash my car across the street never had a problem,” said Gregory Owens, another regular at the car wash.
Saturday, customers were astonished to hear about the carjacking, but said they normally feel safe going there and they’ll keep coming back.
“That’s unusual. It’s strange and sad that happens I hope he’s all right,” said Owens.
“I come whenever there’s somebody around here. I won’t come if this place is like empty,” said Jayah.
Crime mapping showcased within the last three months, one hundred seventy four crimes were reported within a quarter mile of the car wash. They included fifty seven shoplifting reports, three robberies and four burglaries.
“Well I hate for it to happen especially on this property,” said Mike Handworker, the proprietor of the car wash on N. Avalon.
Handworker said in about forty years running the business he hasn’t had anything like this carjacking happen before.
“I just hope the police get ’em put ’em where they need to be. They shouldn’t. anybody’s stealing from people that work their life to have something and someone wants to just come take it from them that’s not right,” said Handworker.
The suspects’ car was described as a gold 1999-2005 Chevrolet Impala with no hub caps, a donut tire on the front right wheel and a dark gray left front quarter panel
One suspect was described as a man with a medium build, wearing a crimson masked sweatshirt with a light-colored T-shirt underneath and dark pants. This suspect was armed with a black handgun.
Another suspect was described as a man with a stocky build, wearing a blue masked sweatshirt with white lettering on the front, a light-colored T-shirt underneath and dark pants.
