Car thief crashes in downtown Hartford following pursue
HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) – A suspect in a car theft is back in custody now after he escaped his handcuffs and hid from police for an hour in downtown Hartford.
Kevin Feliciano, 22, was cuffed and put in a police car around nine a.m. That’s how his run from the law ended. Police say it actually began ten hours earlier and more than eighty miles away.
Around eleven p.m. on Wednesday, Greenwich police informed state troopers that a two thousand three Honda had been recently stolen in Greenwich. The victim’s cellphone was still in the car and police were able to track the vehicle using the phone’s GPS.
Troopers found and attempted to stop the car as it took exit forty seven into Hartford, but the suspect rammed one of the police cruisers, sideswiped another cruiser, and sped off. At least one trooper fired his weapon at the fleeing car.
The Honda continued off of exit forty seven onto Sigourney Street in Hartford, where it crashed into a wall at intersection of Sigourney and Park Streets. The suspect was uninjured by the shots fired and the crash. Two troopers were transported to a local hospital to be evaluated for minor injuries, and were released.
Troopers took Feliciano to Troop H headquarters in Hartford. At approximately eight a.m., troopers took him to Hartford Superior Court for arraignment. While he was being transferred from State Police to court custody, he slipped his handcuffs and took off running.
Sate and local police searched passing cars and buses for any sign of the fugitive. Fortunately for police, there were already extra troopers nearby for Hillary Clinton’s campaign visit. Within a few minutes of searching, they found Feliciano’s orange jumpsuit discarded next to a house, but no Feliciano.
“They were in back of our parking lot, they were looking in our garbage cans,” said Nancy Perkel, who works at a nearby law stiff. “There is not one place they did not cover.”
About an hour later, a police dog got a whiff, and after literally hammering the bushes in front of fifty five Russ Street, police found Feliciano, now wearing just his stained underwear. They hauled him away in front of TV cameras and amazed neighbors.
“I’m just astonished he was able to escape and get away in his trunks and socks and hide in the bushes all of this time,” said Charlene Dukes, as she observed from her office steps across the street.
Police say Feliciano has a lengthy record. He was already charged with stealing a car and ramming into police. This escape just adds to the crimes with which he will now be charged as he goes back to court under intense guard.
